The National Police Memorial in Canberra creates an evocative ceremonial setting, recognising those who have lost their lives in service. Commissioned via an open design competition, the intention was to communicate the "uncertain nature of policing".¹

Typographic design brings nuanced tone, emotion and subtle visitor guidance to the space — touchstones remembering individuals are tactile and intimate, commissioned calligraphy brings individual character to selected quotes, and an assured, balanced font aligns with the aspirational qualities of serving police officers. More than 100 quotes from colleagues and loved ones are etched into the ground plane, with a broad typographic palette, scale and placement used to reflect diverse voices.

The memorial is designed to last for 50 years, with additional touchstones added each year.
